Reflecting the continuing strong market for rare stamps and postal history, and with dealers and exhibitors looking towards the major international exhibitions coming up, culminating with London 2010, our latest series of auctions, held April 1-5, 2008, totalled nearly 10 million Euro, averaging 30% over the estimates and with a very high percentage of lots sold.
|
Among the Europe and Colonies lots on offer, a section of France drew much interest and excellent results for covers with uncommon frankings or to unusual destinations, with results often reaching multiples of estimates. Overseas lots included strong coverage of a large Egypt section, while Persia rarities and inverted centres brought excellent results. British area lots, and particularly Great Britain proper, were offered in profusion. A session which included several hundred "Penny Blacks" in high quality drew intense bidding from the room as well as from those bidding via the internet, with lot after lot soaring to levels well above estimate. For example, a block of four of the 1d "Rainbow Trials," estimated at 5'000 Euro, brought 14'340 Euro - and this result was typical of the realisations throughout the session, with some "Penny Blacks" bringing 360 to 420 Euro each, and one from plate 11, matched with a "Penny Red" from the same plate and position, bringing 3’107 Euro.

The David Feldman auction of the "Atlantic" collection of Classic Switzerland, presented over 270 lots in a deluxe, bi-lingual (German/English) catalogue. Of these, 97% were sold, for a total of 168% of the printed estimates.
Bidders from throughout Switzerland as well as from several foreign countries were present both in the auction room or via the internet, with most lots starting at modest levels and then soaring higher, sometimes to amazing levels.
The Cantonal Issues which made up a the main part of the catalogue saw many outstanding realisations. For example, the Zurich 6rp mint strip of ten, ex Hind, estimated for CHF 10'000, sold for CHF 31'070 (all results include buyer's premium). The right and left halves of a "Double Geneva" used on a matched pair of covers, estimated at CHF 20'000, brought CHF 47'800, while a pair of the Geneva "Large Eagles" on cover soared to CHF 64'530 against an estimate of CHF 15'000.
From the Winterthur issue, a strip of three of the 2 1/2rp used on cover, estimated at CHF 60'000, realised CHF 83'650. A mixed franking of the Winterthur with a 2 1/2rp Orts-Post, brought CHF 155'350 and another mixed franking, with the Rayon I 5r value, climbed to an astonishing CHF 191'200.

An unprecedented surge in demand pushed activity and prices to unprecedented levels, with intense bidding from all over the world. The frenetic pace culminated in an exceptional total result for the week of auctions that began April 15 and ended April 21. Six different catalogues presented nearly 5'000 total lots, a panoply of material that encompassed the world of philately. Strong bids from multitudes of bidders resulted in a memorable week of auctions, with prices pushed for lot after lot to new peaks.
Several room bidders noted that the internet has finally become an increasingly important factor, with internet bidders holding their own against telephone bidders, agents and others physically present in the auction room. According to a representative of Core Technologies, who provide the software for internet bidding, at least 425 different bidders were connected during some portion of the auctions, bid on over 36% of the lots (often with multiple internet bidders on the same lot), and won about 23% of the total lots. A session of over 500 lots of Great Britain saw prices surpass recent London levels for choice material, with rare proofs and multiples leading the way. A strip of six of the Penny Black tied to piece soared to € 38'240 (about £26'000) and a used block of six on piece fetched € 43'020 (about £29'250) while an Ormond Hill die proof in ultramarine overprinted "Specimen" sold for € 31'070 (about £21'125, well over its present catalogue value) to an internet bidder after intense competition. Among more modern issues, the popular Seahorse £1, in a mint corner margin example, brought € 5,258 (about £ 3'575) - typical of the results for key stamps throughout the session. Another session of British Commonwealth saw prices nearing or surpassing catalogue values for choice material, and strong activity for high-quality sections of Canada & BNA, Cape of Good Hope and other areas. The dispersal of the unique archive of the Courvoisier company of Switzerland, who had printed stamps for over 80 countries world-wide, was intensely contested by a room full of bidders including auction agents, telephone bidders and dozens internet bidders. Lot after lot soared to two, three, four or even higher multiples of the estimates as collectors of thematics vied against country specialtists and dealers. The highlight of the sale was a lot of 59 imperforate proofs and essays of the 1948 Gandhi issue of India, which opened at € 22'000 and was the subject of bidding by no less than 6 telephone bidders, several internet bidders and several agents. Step by step, the price climbed relentlessly, and the lot was hammered down for € 89'625 (about $121'890) to sustained applause. Similar levels prevailed for items from popular areas; for example a collection of Papua New Guinea issues of 1962-82, estimated at € 4'000 - 8'000, ended in a battle between telephone and internet bidders at € 33'460 (about $45'500) and a collection of Vatican City, estimated at € 10'000 - 20'000, went to a telephone bidder against agent and other floor bids for € 57,360 (about $78'000). |
Among the Overseas lots, a strong section of United States material drew many bids from there via the internet as well as from agents and collectors present in the auction room. The 1869 15c type II and 24c inverted centers, used, together brought € 30'475 (about $41'500) and an attractive block of four of the 1915 50c Franklin (Scott no. 440) opened well over its estimate and was finally hammered down for € 9'560 (about $13'000) against a Scott catalogue value of $5'200. A section of thematics, featuring Olympics and Polar material, went well, with unusual material (programmes, tickets, signed memorabilia) leading the way. The company's semi-annual auction of Rarities of the World included an exhibit-mounted collection of Argentina which brought € 149'375 (about $203'000); the famous Cape of Good Hope 4d Black triangular climbed to € 35'850 (about £24'400) in a duel between auction agents, and the unique 1870 French "boule de moulins" cover to Paris forwarded to Russia was picked up by a telephone bidder for € 69'310 - just a few of many great realisations throughout that sale. The final sessions of the week were Collections, Large Lots & Estates. Collectors and dealers from every continent had come to view; some had spent a week or more. Lot after lot was hammered down at multiples of its printed estimates; lot after lot was the subject of intense rivalry both in the room and over the internet. The highlight of the day's sessions came near the end, when an investment holding of Peoples Republic of China came under the hammer. Opening at € 120'000 (the high estimate), it soon soared past € 200'000 and then € 300'000 until only two bidders remained - and the hammer finally dropped at € 406'300 (about $552'500, exceeding Scott catalogue value of about $520'000). Bidders and staff agreed that it had been an extraordinary week, one of the strongest auctions anyone could remember anywhere. The next David Feldman auctions are scheduled for early October 2007, and potential vendors are requested to contact the staff as soon as possible, as catalogues will be closing in mid-July at the latest. Specialised sections of Sweden and of classic Brazil are already on hand, and the company hopes to bring its unrivaled mix of expertise and promotion to bear on every property consigned for October. We will also have our first separate section of forgeries, very attractive Great Britain classics, Canada singles, and over 130 lots of Mexico singles and postal history. The collections, once again will be a highlight of the sale; over 1200 in all with the two largest collections we have ever offered intact; a British Commonwealth collection in ONE Imperial album estimated at $100,000-125,000, and a worldwide Estate estimated at $55,000-65,000. Also scattered throughout the Foreign country collections will be an oldtime collection of Europe and Asia to 1926 formed in Europe and to be sold intact by country. Strong postal history lots will be a constant throughout the auction.
|
British Commonwealth country collection will begin the final session on Sunday with excellent G.B., and Canada & Provinces. This will be followed by Commonwealth general collections (including the Commonwealth one album collection estimated at $100,000). Foreign country collections will be highlighted by China, France & Colonies, Germany & Colonies (with a cover group), an excellent section of Japan with one collection estimated at $14,000-16,000, Mexico, Netherlands & Colonies, Portugal & Colonies, Spain & Colonies, and an award winning collection of Venezuela. This section will be immediately followed by Foreign general collections, and our usual excellent selection of “Worldwide Collections & Various” highlighted by the intact Estate valued at $55,000-65,000. Also included will be a strong cover section with lots estimated at $20,000; $9500; $8000; $7500; $5000, etc. It will finally end with topical collections, and literature.

DAVID FELDMAN December 3, 2006 Geneva Auction Results: New Record Price Levels for Romania, Rarities and Egypt
| The "Tomasini" Romania, a Grand Prix collection not seen for over twenty years, and featuring important rarities some of which had not been on the market in over 40 years, captured the imagination and fervor of buyers from across Europe and around the world, often surprising those present at the auction. The first lot set the tenor of the entire auction: The first stamp of Romania, the 27 parale of the famous "Bulls," in mint condition and unquestionably the finest known example, had been estimated at Euro 50'000 to 70'000 and soared to Euro 154'000 (all results herein include buyer's commission) in a protracted battle among several bidders. This contrasts with a Scott catalogue value of just $19,000!
Lot after lot, nearly every estimate was matched or exceeded, especially for the rarest items. Among other "Bulls," the superb mint 54 parale brought Euro 54'500 (catalogue value $4'250), the mint 81 parale went for Euro 142,200 (catalogue value $21'000) and the 108 parale reached Euro 42,660 (catalogue $14'000). Similar levels prevailed for the used and the covers; for example, a 108 parale on cover from Piatra, estimated for Euro 40'000 to 60'000, opened at Euro 60'000 and finally stopped at Euro 142,200. The famous "Large Journal" franked by 8 of the 32 known examples of the Second Issue 5 parale on bluish paper, which had previously graced the Schwartz and Burrus collections, had been estimated at Euro 500'000 to 750'000. If it sold, it would be the world record price for any Central or Eastern European item. Anticipation was high as it opened at Euro 500'000 and went up slowly, step by step, to a final result of Euro 829'500 - or well over US $1 million, ranking it within the club of the "World's Greatest Rarities." The rest of the Romania auction continued with similar results throughout. David Feldman, chairman of the auction company, stated, "Our efforts to produce an intelligent and beautiful catalogue worthy of the connoisseurship evident throughout this collection have certainly been rewarded. The new price levels for the previously under-valued classics of Romania are an example of how proper promotion coupled with extraordinary material will bring exceptional results. Innovation, expertise and world-wide presence set to task with excellent material is an ideal formula - one which has rewarded us with world records time and again." |
The company's semi-annual auction of "Rarities of the World" included a large section of classic Mauritius, another of "Via Panama" postal history, as well as stamps, covers and collections from Afghanistan to USA. A cancelled block of four of the Cape of Good Hope 1d "Woodblock," ex Dale-Lichtenstein, brought Euro 40'300 (low estimate Euro 20'000) while two first issue covers from Reunion brought Euro 52'000 and 57'000 respectively. Among the Panama lots, an 1860 cover from the Danish West Indies to Hawaii via Panama, and franked with the 3c Arms stamp, opened at Euro 7'000 and brought Euro 23'700. A specialised collection of the Brooke family issues of Sarawak, 1869-1909, estimated at Euro 200'000, sold for Euro 284,400 as one lot. A large multiple of the first printing of the Switzerland "Basle Dove" was estimated at Euro 120'000 and sold for Euro 171'825.
Mauritius classics continued the trend set in David Feldman's June auction, with prices for attractive stamps often exceeding catalogue values. For example, the 2d "Sherwin" (SG no. 40), with a catalogue value of $10'000 and estimated at Euro 5'000, sold after intense bidding for Euro 17'750, and an unused 1d Dardenne litho (SG no. 41a) opened at Euro 9'000 and sold for Euro 21'330. The final section of the auctions, comprising the second portion of the famous "Nile" collection of Egypt postal history, also saw strong realisations for the top items, especially for mixed frankings and for Egypt used abroad. The combination cover franked by the 10 piastre first issue together with stamps of Italy, posted through the Italian P.O. at Alexandria, opened at Euro 30'000 and sold for Euro 65'175, while two covers with Egypt second issue 1pi values used from Greece, and showing Greek 20 lepta values added as postage dues, brought Euro 3'800 and 4'000 respectively. In fewer than 500 lots, the auction series with three deluxe catalogues achieved outstanding results. A complete list of prices realised is posted on the company's web site. The large comprehensive David Feldman Spring auction is planned for the end of March 2007, and consignments are invited until the middle of January. |

available, with over US $4,000,000 in individual stamps and covers as well as
lots and collections, plus several other properties including Grand Prix

depth.
The final sessions of the auctions, on June 10, will present nearly 700 lots of

The latest David Feldman SA series of auctions (held November 29 - December
3) brought spirited bidding from clients present in the room, whether in person,
over telephone links, by agents, or (importantly) over the internet. In a week
of auctions that combined specialised collections (from Persia to Switzerland,
Australian States to Greece, Egypt to Classic postal history worldwide), the
trend was clear: material fresh to the marketplace was in high demand, and the
prices reflected this.
Prices Realised can be viewed and/or downloaded in PDF format at
https://www.davidfeldman.com/PR/055/PR_055.pdf
In fact, the internet was so much a presence throughout the week that some
commented that this ready connection from anywhere in the world would have been
sorely missed had it been absent. Well over 200 bidders from nearly 40 countries
were able to participate, hear the live audio and take part, and thus win as
many lots as if they had been present in the auction room - for indeed they were,
in real time!
David Feldman, chairman of the company, commented, "Collectors should take
advantage of the strong market for fresh material, choice classics and
interesting covers. With every auction, we see an almost insatiable demand,
particularly for nice collections offered intact, which often sell for more than
they would have if broken down. Of course, 'showpiece' items from every area,
which appeal to both connoisseurs and exhibitors, are always strong, as are
truly rare items regardless of price levels."
The next David Feldman SA auctions are set for Washington DC in May 2006.

From November 29 through December 3, David Feldman SA of Geneva, Switzerland

| The Autumn series of auctions by
David Feldman SA of Geneva,
Switzerland featured many instances of furious bidding for select lots which
often carried the final results to multiples of the estimates. This was equally
true for the Collections & Lots section as for top Holy Land exhibit items, for
British Empire as well as classic Greece. Held November 24-27, the sales began with the Rosedale Collections of Holyland and Holocaust material. Several prominent collectors battled for the top showpieces. For example, the only known Ottoman *Succursale*de Notre DameÓ postmark of Jerusalem, on a postcard, was estimated at CHF 10*000, opened at CHF 16*000 and was hammered down for CHF 33*000 (results given include 18% buyer*s commission). An Austrian Offices first issue three-colour franking cover, considered one of the finest Holy Land items extant, brought well over top estimate, CHF 76*000, in the sales room. In the Holocaust section, a collection of about 100 *JudenratÓ covers, estimated at CHF 8*000, brought over CHF 35*000 after intense competition. |
|
| The fourth portion of the immense Greece Large Hermes Heads collection offered in several recent Feldman auctions brought intense bidding both in Geneva and in a second sales room in Athens, as well as from many bidders connected via the internet. Top items soared well above the estimates here as well. For example, the 1861 20 L Athens Provisional printing with solid background, used on cover, brought over CHF 76*000; the unique used 1875-80 20 L with control numbers inverted and on the front (the famous Sparta error), estimated at CHF 130*000, brought CHF 224*000. |
Greece Large Hermes Heads on a wonderful letter |
| Lots throughout the sale at all price levels
brought equally strong ratios to estimates, from buyers who applauded each other
when prices reached dizzying heights. The unique David Feldman service of providing buyers world-wide with direct internet connection to the auction room would prove its value over and over in the auctions, as collectors from as far away as Estonia, Thailand, and USA (among well over 100 internet bidders from nearly 30 countries including Vanuatu) were eager participants throughout every section of the auctions, winning a fair share of the lots they bid on, often against bidders and agents in the room. The internet bidders* participation and success rises with each series of auctions. The *All WorldÓ portion of the auctions had significant sections of classic France, Switzerland, British Empire, better world-wide Zeppelin covers, Olympics & Thematics, including Polar postal history. In these areas, too, there were many cases of bids soaring well past the estimates, and overall the trend was clear: attractive material, from proofs to stamps to postal history, will find ready buyers in the global marketplace provided by David Feldman SA. The special semi-annual auction of Rarities of the World offered 120 distinguished lots from all over the globe. Airmail rarities included the Colombia *CartoonsÓ set (Scott C2-10) which brought CHF 33,000 against a Scott catalogue value of $33,400 and a block of the Newfoundland 1932 $1.50 Dornier Do-X inverted surcharge, one of two known, which fetched over the high estimate at CHF 65*000. Among classic items in the same auction, the famous Brazil first issue 90r used block of 17, ex-Newbury, sold for nearly CHF 50*000. Great Britain*s *Penny BlackÓ used on trans-Atlantic cover soared to over double the estimate, about CHF 38*000, while a magnificent cover with the 1858 54p *Bull*s HeadÓ of Rumania brought CHF 52*000. Among more modern material, a 1903 Thailand postal card used from Laos to Russia with French Indochina franking realized over CHF 35*000. The ever-popular sessions devoted to Collections & Estates saw an auction room often packed to capacity, plus bidders on the internet, lock horns over 850 lots which some commented were the strongest overall offering in many years. Fresh collections and accumulations brought several multiples of the estimates from those who had the opportunity to view and evaluate them. No area was neglected in the bidding, and British Empire was particularly strong, as were France & Colonies, and cover lots from several estates included in the auction. The David Feldman company holds auctions in the Spring and the Autumn of each year. They have consistently set the world*s records for prices achieved in every area of philately, and work closely with gold medal and Grand Prix exhibitors in building and marketing their collections. The company*s next auctions, scheduled for May of 2005, are currently in preparation, and consignments are eagerly sought and accepted daily through the end of January.
